- Remove any fully matured fruit from citrus trees, such as the Meyer lemon whose main crop ripened in October. Discard those that are now softening and rotting on the tree attracting fruit fly, and confine to the trash pack.
- Tuberous begonias make magnificent container or basket plants in brightly lit but sheltered sites out of the full summer sun. However, they need to be watered with care when the soil starts to dry out. A constantly saturated medium tends to encourage fungal infections.
- Sow seeds of winter greens in punnets now, to plant out as seedlings in March. Crops such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale need to be well established before the onset of cooler weather.
- Never buy a plant and then wonder where to put it – select the site first making sure that the plants needs will be met by the required degrees of shade, sunlight, air and moisture. Above all make sure you have determined the size of the plant at maturity.
