Will Toledo and his band Car Seat Headrest are the new indie darlings, picking at the scraps of life through off-beat, alt-country rock songs for college types. Toledo is a prolific artist and his 11th album is a rerecording of his sixth, given extra musical oomph and professional production now that his band Car Seat Headrest can add muscular rock grunt to what were bare-bones acoustic tracks. In the same vein as Ryan Adams, Toledo is the type of artist who throws his musical charms out there through lyrics capturing the awkwardness and excitement of youth. The bigger, fleshed out sound of Twin Fantasy pushes the album into a more epic rock sound, matched by Toledo’s insecure lyrics on such songs as Cute Things where he howls, “Give me Frank Ocean’s voice and James Brown’s stage presence.”
