- Whenever perennial plants are lifted and divided in early autumn, set them back into refurbished soil that has been given a spadeful of ‘Gardener’s Aid’ – a mixture of compost or leaf mould plus blood and bone-all dampened down with a seaweed tonic.
- Spring flowering rockery plants like saxifrage, ajuga, cerastium (snow in summer) and dianthus can be divided. Arabis, campanula, pentstemons, carnations and perennial salvias can also be readily propagated from short slips taken with a small heel of the old stem.
- Time to trim evergreen hedges that have made considerable summer growth: ivy on walls; espaliered fruit trees that have produced stronger upward rather than lateral growth; and summer flowering ornamental plants that have outgrown their allotted space.
- Clip any late summer growth from ornamental grape vines and wisteria. Snip off any foliage, twist the canes into circles and secure. It will form the base of a wreath ready for Christmas decoration.
