PLANNING for one of the largest infrastructure projects in Queanbeyan's history – the upgrade of the Queanbeyan Sewage Treatment Plant - is in full swing after last week’s consultation workshop held with regulatory agencies.

Agencies representing federal, NSW and ACT regulators have met in Canberra to consider the main issues and the timeline for the project.
Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said identifying and working through the issues with all stakeholders was a priority for Queanbeyan City Council.
“Friday’s workshop was just the beginning of a long and extensive consultation process which will include all stakeholders,” he said.
“The key areas we’ve identified from today’s workshop with regulators include water quality and quantity entering Lake Burley Griffin and the flexibility to address extreme events, growth timelines and technological advances. Queanbeyan City Council is committed to meeting the many and varied needs of the community and stakeholders in the ACT and NSW and of course meeting regulatory requirements.”
The Queanbeyan Sewage Treatment Plant was constructed in the mid-1930s and treats Queanbeyan’s effluent prior to discharge into the Molonglo River. A new facility is required to replace the ageing infrastructure and to meet the needs of the growing population and tighter standards for effluent treatment.
Council has committed to a six-year phased project to upgrade the treatment plant and has engaged GHD as the Project Manager/Technical Advisor to plan, guide and oversee project delivery.
