Its creation was in response to the forecasted need for disabled and aged care staff in the region.
It will be one of several vocational training centres set to be established across New South Wales, named SkillsPoints.
The state’s deputy premier and member for Monaro John Barilaro said the city already struggled to care for disabled and aged citizens.
“There is already strong demand for such skill sets as medical technicians, disability and aged care workers, social and welfare professionals and early childhood educators,” Mr Barilaro said.
“SkillsPoints are intersection points where TAFE NSW will work with business and industry to develop curriculum and training to provide Australians with the skills needed for the jobs of the future.”
The Queanbeyan community has been campaigning to build a respite centre in the city and council administrator Tim Overall said the SkillsPoint was a step in the right direction.
“Aged care is obviously going to continue to be a high growth sector, skilled age care workers and providers as well as child care is the way of the future,” Mr Overall said.
“I welcome that initiative, absolutely.”
Each SkillsPoint will have between eight and 15 employees with the first to open in Newcastle in September, focusing on innovative manufacturing, robotics and science.
The rollout of the remaining headquarters in Griffith, Tamworth, Queanbeyan, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Ultimo, Parramatta and Mount Druitt will be announced in coming months.
Assistant minister for skills Adam Marchall said each location was chosen to support each region’s economic growth and employment needs.
