The thunderstorm warning is in addition to the flood watch warning and the severe weather warning.
The Bureau of Meterology is warning people to prepare for heavy rainfall and damaging winds.
The warning was issued just after 4pm on Friday to areas including South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Lower Western, Upper Western, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and parts of Central Tablelands Forecast Districts.
“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours,” it said.
The NSW State Emergency Service has warned Queanbeyan residents to expect extreme weather conditions on Friday and Saturday and prepare for the risk of flash flooding.
A flood warning has also been issued for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers.
The heaviest falls are mostly expected to be during the latter half of the day on Friday, and throughout Saturday.
People living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.
Rainfalls in excess of 100mm are likely over the 48 hour period, with localised falls in excess of 200mm possible in some parts of NSW.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
