Take a look back at some of our biggest sports headlines for 2017.
- 1. Some bright young talents from Queanbeyan picked for representative duty.
We started the year off with two stories showcasing the next generation of Queanbeyan sporting talent.
Netball duo Olivia Clark and Thalia Uilelea turned their performances at local level into selection for the Australian Indigenous netball team. The selection brought pride both in their performances and heritage.
This was followed by 15-year-old basketball star Zali Andrews securing selection for the country national team in February.
- 2. Queanbeyan Cricket Club back where it belongs.
Queanbeyan brought home their first trophy since the 2009/10 season after the dominant junior sides made up for some disappointing first grade results.
- 3. Yet another national champion for Queanbeyan.
Local Andrew Fatale turned back the clock to take home the Australian body building championship at age 46.
- 4. Milestone matches.
Bucking the trend again we have two stories here.
Two of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos’ favourite sons Troy Whiley and Josh Ayers played their 200th first grade game together.
In the same weekend that Whiley and Ayers recorded their milestone, Tigerette Lani Watson played her 100th match for the club, only the third woman to do so.
- 5. If we build it, they will come.
In very exciting news for rugby league fans, the Canberra Raiders opened up the possibility of the team once again playing premiership games at Seiffert Oval.
- 6. Tigerettes claim the title.
The Queanbeyan Tigers won the women’s competition again, a particularly special achievement for coach Cheyne Webster after motorcycle accident.
- 7. Blues take home cup over cross-town rivals.
In what may turn out to be Terry Campese’s last game for the club, the Queanbeyan Blues secured victory over the Kangaroos to finish a season where both teams dominated the competition.
- 8. Queanbeyan City break 51-year cup drought.
You may not hear about reserve grade football often, but 2017 brought us the fairy tale story sport is all about with Queanbeyan City winning their first ever title after 51 years.
- 9. Footy trip with a difference.
The Queanbeyan Tigers showed us they truly believe in their team motto ‘Culture Matters’ with their end of season trip to the Solomon Islands.
- 10. An impressive career recognised.
The Queanbeyan Blues’ Tom Ebsworth became only the seventh life member of Canberra Rugby League after a career which began as a ball boy for the Blues.
