- Tough-rooted perennials like agapanthus and cannas can be lifted and divided now. Replant into ground that has been replenished with compost and blood and bone.
- Check for aphids on spring flowering annuals. Clusters of insects can be rubbed off by gloved finger and thumb.
- In the vegetable garden, blanch the stems of growing leeks with strips of newspaper before hilling soil along the rows. Sow broad beans either for green manure (in vacant plots) or to eat; plus spinach, radish and spring onions. Plant rhubarb crowns, strawberries and asparagus.
- Shrubs that can be pruned now include abelia, escallonia, buddleia, hydrangea, crepe myrtle, hibiscus syriacus, and oleander.
