Freedom of Entry March: As part of celebrating 75 years since its commissioning, on July 1, Queanbeyan will bestow trust and confidence in HMAS Harman through the Freedom of Entry March. Everyone is encouraged to line the streets, particularly at the intersection of Crawford and Monaro Streets. From this vantage point the Navy will be stopped by the NSW Police Force before the mayor will have the honour of inspecting them. The march will then proceed into Queen Elizabeth II Park for performances from the Royal Navy Band and Queanbeyan City Pipes and Drums along with food and coffee stalls. The march begins at 10.30am from the Memorial Gardens on Antill Street. Find all the details on the council’s website.

Googong Road and Old Cooma Road intersection: The council has approved the design for a signalised intersection for Old Cooma Road and Googong Dam Road. Council will work with the Googong developers, who are constructing the intersection, on a design for a slip lane for north bound traffic along Old Cooma Road. Council also decided to expedite the purchase of additional land that will be required for a slip lane and to seek grant funding for construction.
Captains Flat community facility upgrade: After receiving a number of suggestions from the community about what their priorities were, work to improve community facilities in Captains Flat has begun. This project is funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund. Upgrades to the picnic area have begun, with the old shelter removed and a new shelter soon to be installed. The playground will be extended and the amenities building will be painted on the inside through a community-run working bee, while a mural artist will paint the outside.
Bungendore Town Centre improvements: Ten new timber seats have been installed around the town centre, and enclosures for bins and artwork on the bins will follow shortly. Rows of trees are also being planted at the two new entrance signs on the Kings Highway.
Queanbeyan approach enhancements: Enhancements to the approach to the Queens Bridge are underway. The landscaping at the roundabout on the intersection of Yass and Bungendore Roads is being transformed, with the removal of the hedges and planting of crepe myrtles and low under-plantings. Bungendore Road landscaping improvements include the removal of some eucalypts and pines, some of which will be replaced with Manchurian pears and improvements to gardens around the Art Gallery.
