With the June long weekend over it’s that time of year to say goodbye to bass and trout, as we give them space to spawn.

It was very quiet this year in the rivers for trout, with extremely dry weather just not giving the desired water flow.
I did venture up to the Eucumbene River for one last hurrah to very little success.
However, I did slip into an old favourite bay in the lake, down near the dam wall which produced two days of amazing fishing; flicking inbetween tree’s and working flatter shallow water with a fast retrieve.
Lures I used were a trusty Mapso spinner in brown trout, and yellow winged Tassie, which both produced very healthy rainbows.
I also soaked some bait at night which again produced some mint-condition rainbows.
I had these fish cleaned and in brine ready for the smoker in under 10 minutes - yum yum!
With the closure of one aspect of fishing, another opens - bluefin tuna!
This years’ open run has been electric; fish in the high 80kg mark have already been recorded.
Plenty of boats headed out of Bermi, Narooma and the Bay to tempt one of these incredible fish and most boats found fish.
Multi-way hook-ups were definitely not uncommon, and some boats had five fish hooked at once.
The normal techniques are working; cubing and trolling and most boats were mixing it up between both methods.
The average fish weight is a little up this year around 58kg mark and this is just the beginning.
