Johnny Marr has stood the test of time and as an English musician best known as the guitarist (and co-writer with Morrissey) of The Smiths, he also makes an extremely talented solo artist.
Call The Comet is his third solo effort. It’s awesome – the energy is high and these hard-rocking songs complete with Marr’s jangley guitar riffs are wonderfully produced.
It’s all quality here – tight musicianship, an escalating wall of sound inhabiting each song to create a very English Brit-pop atmosphere, and a solo artist at the top of his game.
In the driving rhythm of Hey Angel, Marr only creates guitar acrobatics when required and never at the expense of the song.
It’s why he is such a gifted guitarist – he doesn’t indulge, he lets his guitar notes enter the fray to establish rock songs, not overtake them.
Three albums in, this is a solo artist who is consistently releasing some exceptional rock songs.
