The society will now have a new branch offering sculpture exhibitions and workshops for the local community.
The Canberra-based Strathnairn sculpture group have confirmed their plans to move across the border. This move will bolster the QAS Gallery and provide a source of extra funding. The relocated sculptors will all become members of the QAS and add to the society’s existing facilities.
The Strathnairn sculpture group’s representative, Jim Sullivan, convinced the QAS committee his groups work could play a leading part in the gallery and wider Queanbeyan arts community.
The move will also provide the sculptors with more storage in the rebuilt QAS garden shed. This project will make the space bigger for both parties.
The Strathnairn announcement comes as the new QAS Gallery building gets its final touches. The local arts community secured $120,000 in funding to build the new gallery, through a mixture of fundraising and government grants.
The QAS is unique among Australian arts societies in terms of the number of exhibitions it runs. The society usually hosts a new exhibition each month.
The Strathnairn sculptors will be able display and sell their works and share their skills with the Queanbeyan community. This addition will allow a new generation of local artists explore their potential.
Local artist and QAS President Barry Cranston said “The sculptor group have had little opportunity display and sell their works. There is no doubt having night sculptors classes will be will be a huge benefit to QAS.”
“It was pleasing to get grants from the NSW Government and the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council to add another working gallery to our Queanbeyan Art facility.”
“The QAS Gallery is perfect to take sculptors with a exhibition each month the plants for the sculptors will fit under the art making a beautiful display of art” Barry said.
The first QAS exhibitions featuring work from the Strathnairn sculptors will open in Queanbeyan later this year. The date and availability of sculpture workshops are yet to be confirmed. Please contact the gallery for further information.
