With only two rounds left before the semi-finals Queanbeyan Blues women’s tag team looks like missing out in the playoffs. But they have come along way considering this is their first season in the competition.

On Saturday the side played Goulburn Workers Bulldogs on Seiffert Oval and although they were unable to break through the Goulburn women’s defence they put up a really good fight narrowly missing crossing the line on several occasions.
Perhaps the most disappointing thing about the game was the lack of crowd support for the women in this fast paced, free flowing and quite spectacular sport.
Very few of the Queanbeyan side had played league tag before the start of the season and they didn’t know what to expect. Most had not played touch or Oztag either but under experienced coach Jacinta Williams they were keen to have a go and have fun.
Some of the girls had played tackle before, but tag seems much faster and grabbing a strip of material velcroed to the hips of a fast moving runner is more difficult than it sounds.
Team representative Taylor Thorpe said that when the girls started the season it took some time for them to work out each other’s playing style and particular abilities and strengths but as the season progressed they had been quickly improving.
They were up against several teams like Goulburn, whose players had been together since the inception of the competition three years ago and places like Yass that had strong, competitive touch competitions. In these two towns both the women’s tackle and league tag competitions draw quite strong spectator support.
“It is somewhat intimidating when we play over in Goulburn or Yass and there is a large local crowd, but it is also exciting and fun playing in front of an audience,” Thorpe said. “On Saturday the Goulburn supporters outnumbered out supporters and it would have been nice to see some more people out.”
The Blues women have a bye this weekend and in the final round play Tuggeranong Bushrangers. Gungahlin Bulls play Yass Magpies in Yass, Goulburn Bulldogs play Woden Valley Rams in Goulburn and the two Belconnen teams play in Belconnen.
