The preliminary final will be played on Sunday on Seiffert Oval, at 12.10 pm, against Queanbeyan United, who were soundly defeated by the Yass Girlpies at Yass, 42 – 4.
Last Friday Goulburn Stockmen faced an understrength Tuggeranong Buffaloes team who could only manage to field 10 players. Goulburn fielded a full side with players on the bench for the semifinal to see who would play for the the challengers spot in the grand final. It was obvious the Stockmen would dominate play and with their sliding defence they could cover any close assaults on their line.
Jasmine tooth was the first Goulburn player to score, followed shortly after by Elly Hazelton.
It was not long before Elizabeth Bradley also crossed the Buffaloes line, followed by Pearl Rakete with a try out wide to the left. A saving grace for the Buffaloes was that normally accurate Lauren Kelly was having a really bad night with her kicking. Perhaps it was the lack of wind on the unseasonally still night. Kelly is normally quite accurate and can land kicks between the uprights even from out wide but on Friday night she was even having trouble from almost right in front of the posts. Needless to say she has put in a lot of time trying to get her accuracy back at this week’s training session.
The Buffaloes were tackling hard and doing their best to make things harder for the Goulburn girls who, with strength in numbers passed the ball around to find the gaps.
Pearl Rakete crossed the line for her second try, then Jennaya Ottaway scored. Her try was converted by Lauren Kelly, one of only three successful kicks she made for the night.
Then Hollie Deaton then ran almost the entire length of the field to score putting the half time tally at 34 to nil in favour of the Stockmen women. After the break Ash Kara was the first Stockie across the line, followed by Grace Marshall. A short time after that one of the Buffalo women left the field injured so the Stockmen evened up the teams and played the rest of the game as a nine a side competition. Jennaya Ottaway scored again followed by Pearl Rakete knotched up her third and fourth tries followed by another from Elly Hazelton and one form Jordan Brooker, to end the game at 62 to nil.
Also playing on Sunday at Seiffert Oval Queanbeyan are the GWC Bulldogs League Tag Women v Yass Magpies at 9.20am and GWC Bulldogs v Woden Valley Rams at 10.40am.
