I headed out last weekend to some of my favourite snapper grounds off Batemans Bay, and they did not disappoint.

Fish were quite easy to find on the sounder, mostly in the 15-20m of water, but we did mark some better bigger fish in under 8m.

Some fish were taking on a simple bottom bashing rig using squid and pilchards as bait, but all the bigger fish were on plastics and hooked up mid water column.

Something that did surprise me is that this would be one of the first times a floating pillie did not get a touch, even with the fish so high up off the bottom. 

The temperature off the beach is still cold, while this time last year some nice veins of warm, blue water had already made their way into the bay, sparking a great flathead bite closer to shore.

I found some nice flathead off Durras in 30-40m of water but struggled off the Tollgates.

A few boats went south towards Broulee and managed a good bag of flatties, snapper and gummy sharks.

St Georges Basin has been fishing reasonably well too; snapper and big taylor have been plentiful and now starting to see some better bites of big duskies .

In the mountains, things are still very good – both Tangtangra and Eucumbene are producing the goods and should be on the to do list.

Locally, Ginninderra produced some healthy yellow belly over the weekend for a few happy bait anglers.

Googong is a must for a feed of redfin, with plenty of nice fish landed as of late.
