Jobs to do in the garden this week
- Enjoy annual herbs such as coriander and rocket but disappointed with failure to grow or bolting to seed? Both become stressed in summer sun and are happiest in cool, moist conditions over spring and autumn. Sow directly from seed into enriched, moist soil; protect from snails and feed regularly with liquid plant food.
- Protect members of the cabbage family from the ravages of the cabbage white butterfly: lay bait for hungry snails. Keep young greens like lettuce on the move with fortnightly applications of liquid plant food. Once growth is allowed to slow down the leaves will become quite bitter.
- Look out for a compact Nandina called ‘Lemon Lime’ – great for mass planting or containers. It stunning year-round lime green foliage a decorative change from the usual winter red.
- Any sheltered garden, courtyard or balcony that enjoys a patch of morning sunlight has an ideal spot in which to grow fuschias – invaluable perennial shrubs to add colour to otherwise partially shady places. Give them a rich woodland soil and regular supplies of food and water and you will find they are easy to grow.
