Jobs to do in the garden this week
- Stay at home gardeners can do some judicious summer pruning while they can usefully see the fruiting spurs. Cut back upright growth as well as over long lateral branches. Save any thinning out of the inner branches until the normal pruning time. Net fruit crops from the birds.
- Low growing Alyssum, oft known as Sweet Alice because of it’s honey scent, is an annual of exceptional value. As an attractant for beneficial insects it is known to keep codling moth under control in organic orchards.
- Train in the new shoots of brambles like raspberries that will carry an autumn crop. Remove any unwanted strawberry runners before they become intertwined. If you wish to propagate from any first year’s virus free plantings, peg runners into small pots sunk into the ground and transplant in March.
- Water tomato plants regularly to avoid basal patches of blossom end rot. And don’t be tempted to remove foliage to expose the fruit to the sunlight. Tomatoes ripen by temperature among their foliage and will scorch in direct summer sun.
