Jobs to do in the garden this week
- Remove any fully matured fruit from citrus trees such as the Meyer lemon, whose main crop ripened in October. Discard those that are now softening and rotting on the tree, attracting fruit fly, and confine to the trash pack.
- Tuberous begonias make magnificent container or basket plants in brightly lit but sheltered sites out of the full summer sun. However, they need to be watered with care when the soil starts to dry out. A constantly saturated medium tends to encourage fungal infections.
- Take a break at the Rainforest Gully (National Botanic Gardens), a cool place, in both senses of the word, to spend a warm day – a damp shady place where ferns, mosses, epiphytes and vines grow in layers under a canopy of overlapping trees forming a closed forest.
