“I started trading here in 1994 – 25 years ago – as I could see the need for Queanbeyan residents to have a tyre and mechanical repair outlet on the western side of town,” says Steve Rowland, owner of Transtate Tyres & Mechanical Repairs in Uriarra Road.
Looking at the address’s history, “We are on a old site dating back to the 1940s, however it has always been part of the automotive industry,” he notes.
“We currently have nine employees plus our customer liaison officer, Steffie the Staffie who has been looking after the customers for the past 12 years. There are four fully qualified mechanics here with a combined 103 years of experience and varying knowledge of the automotive trade,” he says.
On top of that, “Over the past seven years we have trained up two apprentices to qualified mechanics and have a fully trained and highly experienced wheel aligner who uses our up-to-date equipment and machinery.”
They do “Servicing and repairs to most makes and models of cars, including log book servicing is carried out daily with us specialising in brakes, steering and suspension. Also having a huge range of sizes in stock of the world’s leading tyre brands with all new fitting equipment and highly experienced tyre technicians is a enormous plus to any local business,” and “We are long-term members of the MTAA and the motoring-based co-operative Capricorn.”

As for any helpful tips to pass on, Steve says “Don’t forget that tyre pressures are one of the most critical components in the quest for tyre longevity, and we offer nitrogen fills, and [free] pressure checks at any time without having to book in.
“This business has set itself a high standard of customer service which we feel is the most important factor to us as looking after people’s needs is what matters,” he says proudly.
“Having such a vast range of experience with a great blend of a youthful and mature workforce allows us to be able to satisfy virtually any request in relation to tyre and mechanical concerns.
“The safety of everyone’s transport is our main concern and we pride ourselves on the advice we can give.
“Having been a part of the Queanbeyan community for the last quarter of a century has been personally very satisfying and I have been fortunate enough to have had a lot of my customers, their kids and even some of their grandkids continue to use our services which is very gratifying.”
On top of that, “Approximately half the staff are Queanbeyan locals which is great for our local economy and in turns helps us stay in touch with the community and cater to their needs.”
