Jobs to do in the garden this week
- One of the best looking flowering shrubs/trees around town right now is the pretty crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia). While many of the original species were troubled by powdery mildew, the cultivars in the Indian Summer series are far more resistant and have an even longer flowering period.
- Snap off the old flower trusses on rhododendrons, making sure you avoid any damage to the new growing tip.
- Roses, which have been having a summer rest, can now be fed to promote new growth and a crop of autumn bloom. ‘Sudden Impact’ pelletised food for roses, which is used in many public gardens including those at Old Parliament House, is easy to apply using the measured scoop.
- Continue to sow straight into the ground: beetroot. bush beans, carrots, coriander, Florence fennel, mesclun salad mix, parsnips, radish, rocket and sweet corn. Grow seedlings of broccoli, kale, leeks, silver beet and spring onion. Keep established seedlings well watered.
