Western Australia need eight wickets to keep their Sheffield Shield finals hopes alive while Queensland were making steady progress in their run chase at the WACA Ground.
Needing 312 for victory, Queensland were 2-77 at tea on Friday, 235 runs short of victory after the hosts scored 348 on the back of captain Mitch Marsh's 105.
Queensland's hope possibly rest with Test opener Matt Renshaw, who is unbeaten on 43 from 47 deliveries including eight boundaries.
Charlie Hemphrey (0) was the other not out bastman.
The Bulls have already lost Test batsmen Joe Burns (3) and Marnus Labuschagne (26), both lbw to Joel Paris and debutant Aaron Hardie respectively.
WA resumed on 4-224 with Marsh converting his overnight 73 to his 11th first class century, a knock that looks vital in the context of a low-scoring contest.
Mark Steketee claimed 4-65 for the Bulls and Michael Neser followed up his 5-15 in the first innings with 3-61.
Should WA win they still need Tasmania to deny NSW victory in Hobart to reach the final against Victoria in Melbourne.
