The criminal, who can't be identified, received a significant jail term for manslaughter after a trial during which his legal team included Ms Gobbo.
She was also involved in one of his previous court matters that resulted in a prison sentence, prompting him to suggest it "wouldn't take Einstein" to work out what was happening.
"If I had known anything about Nicola Gobbo having inappropriate relations with police, I'd have sacked her on the spot," he told the royal commission into police use of informers on Wednesday.
"She's given a whole new meaning to barristers dicking police."
The man revealed he was "still in shock" at revelations Ms Gobbo was registered three times to supply information to police, including between 2005 and 2009 when she represented some of the most well-known members of Melbourne's criminal underworld.
He's the first former client of Ms Gobbo - also known as 'Lawyer X' - to give evidence.
He was asked if he would have been upset to hear of Ms Gobbo's "inappropriate intimate, personal relationships" with one of his co-accused.
"Absolutely not, I would have asked her when my turn was," he told the hearing.
"Had I had any idea I would have sacked her on the spot, and I would have sacked (my solicitor) for putting her onto me."
The man also gave evidence that when Ms Gobbo visited him in prison on one occasion in 2009 she was "panicking" and "scared" about a policeman.
"I don't remember the name. He was in custody. The man she was petrified of was in custody," he said.
He confirmed the man was not corrupt ex-policeman David Miechel, but said he was unable to recall if it might have been another drug squad detective, Paul Dale.
Miechel was jailed after a burglary at a drug stash house in Oakleigh in 2003, which he continued to deny when he gave evidence on Wednesday.
Police informer Terence Hodson was also arrested and turned against Miechel and Mr Dale over the burglary.
Investigations into Mr Dale were dropped after Hodson and his wife Christine were murdered execution-style at their Kew home eight months later.
Mr Dale was charged with the murders after being implicated by gangland criminal Carl Williams, but the allegations were dropped after Williams' 2010 prison murder.
Miechel said Mr Dale had no involvement in the burglary. They've not spoken for 14 or 15 years, he added.
Mr Dale is due to give evidence later on Wednesday.
