Jobs to do in the garden this week
- Late autumn is a good time to 'stratify' or put up any autumn berries whose seed you might wish to grow on, by storing them in a pot or box of damp sand over winter. Tip out in early spring, thumb the seeds clean on kitchen paper and sow as usual.
- Check the garden shed for any overlooked packets of autumn flowering bulbs and plant immediately. Give established bulbs a handful of all purpose plant food.
- Give evergreen hedges a last trim before spring.
- June is a great time to sow 'Earlicrop Massey', a Yates dwarf pea that is heavy cropping and matures early with good size pods. Sow into a sunny, well- drained but damp spot and don't water for a few days. Dwarf peas do not require a trellis though a low support may be beneficial. Boost with additional potassium and harvest between 11-14 weeks.
