Jobs to do in the garden this week
- A second reminder to lift any dahlia tubers that may otherwise deteriorate in winter soils. Use a fork rather than a spade to avoid cutting the roots and store clumps in a cool, dry spot until new shoots indicate replanting time in spring.
- Tree dahlias are often zapped by winter frost just as the last of the flowers begin to open. If you can find these three-stemmed plants with a frost-protected site, the old stems can be cut down, cut into pieces with at least two nodes and set either horizontally or upright in the ground to propagate new plants.
- Check the winter light levels around pots of greenery. Any noteable lengthening of stems between nodes indicates too little light and the pot should be moved.
