The Woden Town Centre (WTC) is a major community and commercial hub and we are keen to build on the 2015 Master Plan to ensure it becomes a thriving destination for residents in Canberra's south.
It is a time of change in the WTC with a significant number of new apartments in the area.
We will hear from Amalgamated Group about The Oaks development in the north and Hindmarsh about the N10 and N11 sites in the east.
By 2040 there could be around 1,000 primary school kids living in apartments.
Two questions to start with are:
- where will the children go to school?;
- and where will the children play?
While we are not sure about the answers to these questions for the WTC, we will see the designs for the new nature playground at Eddison Park, Farrer shops and Torrens shops.
Will we need to re-open the Chifley Primary School?
We note that four of the original six primary schools on the west side of Woden have closed and that Chifley has access to the WTC via a path under Hindmarsh and Melrose Drives.
We will also discuss sites for a CIT, multi-purpose sports and arts centre.
The closure of our CIT and multi-purpose sports hall provides opportunities to bring them closer to the centre which will create activity, with people using the facilities day and night.
Locating facilities in the town centres provides wider economic benefits by bringing people together which reduces social isolation and supports the objective of liveable cities.
The Woden Town Centre services multiple districts and we encourage residents from the south to come along and participate in conversations about the issues facing the Town Centre.
