For preferring to receive help at home rather than move into an aged care facility, help can be provided to eligible people through a Home Care Package.
The decision to accept a Home Care Package has had many positive outcomes for Narrabundah resident Shirley Anderson, who at 82 years old, has a terminal illness and lives by herself.
Due to her declining physical health, Shirley had become socially isolated.
When Shirley received her letter from My Aged Care advising she had been assigned her Home Care Package, she contacted Community Services #1 (CS#1) who she had been involved with over the years through their social groups. Due to her condition, Shirley's attendance at these social groups had decreased.

A CS#1 Home Care Package officer visited Shirley to advise how CS#1's packages could help. It was the start of Shirley's journey back to independence. In that first meeting, Shirley was able to discuss her goals and aspirations with her Home Care Package Officer and together they developed a care plan.
Shirley had always enjoyed going out to buy a 'good coffee' each day, however due to poor health, which made walking difficult, she could only visit her favourite café when family could take her.
Shirley's Home Care Package officer organised an occupational therapy assessment, which resulted in a brand new motorised scooter being purchased for Shirley through her Home Care Package funds.
Shirley is now able to attend her café by herself and even has a custom number plate "Grandma's Bluebird. Feel the power of coffee" and her own reserved parking spot for her scooter. So in addition to receiving assistance for cleaning, transport and personal care, Shirley attends CS#1 social groups again.
Shirley is in regular contact with her CS#1 Home Care Package officer and continues to plan her future.
"My Home Care Package with CS#1 has changed my life. I have had so much already and have so much more I can do and access," Shirley said.
