The magnitude was 2.3, meaning it was a small earthquake. 150 people contacted Geoscience Australia to say they had felt it in the area of South West Rocks, which is on the coast, an hour's drive north of Port Macquarie.
"It would feel more like a truck going past than anything else," said a spokesperson for Geoscience Australia.
"It happened just before 9pm on Christmas Day and was felt quite widely in the area.
"It's a small earthquake, so we wouldn't expect it to be felt more than 20 or 30 kilometres from where the earthquake occurred.
"We have no reports of damage and we wouldn't typically get them for an earthquake of this size. We have had earthquakes in this area previously. There was a series in January 2018, so they're not uncommon," added the spokesperson.
