Hayne, 32, has pleaded not guilty in the Newcastle District Court to two charges of aggravated sexual assault involving a woman in NSW's Hunter Valley.

Prosecutor Hamish Fitzhardinge told the court on Thursday an issue with a subpoena required resolving before Hayne's scheduled May 4 trial.

No details were given in court about the content of the subpoena.

The matter had been listed on Thursday for case management, in which the trial date is formally confirmed and an estimate given on its duration.

But Judge Tim Gartelmann agreed to adjourn the matter to March 12 to sort out the subpoena issue before the trial's commencement.

Hayne was excused from attending Thursday's hearing.

Hayne is accused of sexually assaulting a 26-year-old woman on September 30, 2018, between 8pm and 10pm in Newcastle.

Court documents state Hayne had sex with the woman without her consent and "recklessly inflicted actual bodily harm".

He has been on bail since his arrest and was allowed to travel to Western Australia in July last year to attend a six-month Christian missionary course.

The court previously heard Hayne planned to stay in dormitory-style accommodation with other men near the evangelical Youth With a Mission centre's training campus. Hayne was required to attend lectures, not drink alcohol and report weekly to East Perth police station.

The aggravated rape charges each carry a maximum 20-year jail term.
