A chook. Or maybe 10 chooks.
If you're in the vicinity of the NSW Southern Highlands, you now have the opportunity to adopt a feathered friend this weekend. A Rescued Chicken Adoption Day is being organised by Let The Ladies Go in the highlands and Goulburn .
Founder Tania Daykin said the aim of the event is to raise awareness and educate people.
"Chickens are intelligent and curious that they don't deserve to be treated in this manner," she said.
"Most people think hens lay eggs but the sad truth is that we genetically mutate them to do that."
She further said that a chicken lays 12 eggs on an average in a year but in factory farms, they are forced to lay around 300 eggs annually.
The chickens up for adoption are 18 months old. At this age, they are usually headed to be slaughtered.
"Once they reach the age of 18 months, they are usually slaughtered. That's when we step in, buy the flock, move them to a rehab facility, they are adopted as pets," she added.
The charity, which has rescued and re-homed around 50,000 chickens over the years, has a system in place to ensure that they don't fall into the hands of breeders and dealers.
The invitation-only event will be held on Saturday, September 18 in Mittagong and Goulburn.
There is a limit of 10 chickens per household and attendees are being asked to bring cages or roomy boxes to transport the chickens home.
