Former United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon says Australia is "sure" to be elected as a member of the UN Security Council in 2029.

"I hope for all the best. I'm sure that you'll be elected," Mr Ban told Australian foreign affairs video-podcaster Adil Cader in an interview published this week.
Australia's last seat on the Security Council ended after the 2013 to 2014 term and the 2029 to 2030 term is considered the next available opportunity to nominate for an uncontested seat.
Mr Ban said Australia was a big financial contributor to the UN and had taken five times as many "very important missions" as less prominent members of the Security Council, as well as providing "highly trained" professional staff.
"I know that during the last 75 years of UN history you have been really sending a lot of people to all the conflict zones."
