Fremantle onballer Cerra and Sydney free agent George Hewett are recruiting targets for Carlton as they try to add midfield depth.

According to media reports on grand final day, next week Cerra is set to nominate Carlton as his preferred destination ahead of Melbourne.

Negotiations with the Dockers undoubtedly will involve the Blues' first-round draft pick, currently at No.6.

Speaking two days after his appointment, Voss told ABC Radio that he is yet to speak to Cerra personally and added it is "way too early" to discuss what the trade might involve.

The trade period starts on Monday week.

"That looks pretty promising at this stage," he said of recruiting Cerra.

"Clearly, he's going to be able to add something to our group, be able to add to that midfield depth," Voss said.

Asked about Hewett, Voss said: "We would love to have him."

Voss also was asked about his thoughts on Blues captain Patrick Cripps, who has struggled for form.

The 1996 joint-Brownlow Medallist, a three-time Brisbane premiership player and one of the best midfielders of his generation, said Carlton must not demand too much of Cripps.

Voss sees Cripps as having the sort of centre-forward role that Richmond ace Dustin Martin and Melbourne star Christian Petracca use to such devastating effect.

"I'm pretty confident - I reckon you would be - from what I've seen," Voss said of Cripps in that role.

"He brings some really unique strengths that many don't and we have to make sure that we can bring that out there, and not necessarily think that we're going to get all things from 'Crippa'."

But above and beyond individual players, Voss continues to make it clear he will demand greater professionalism at Carlton as they try to return to the top eight.

"At the moment we sit in the promise and potential stage and we have to move that really quickly," he said.

"There's no doubt there's a top end now, we've all seen, that but we all realise there's a helluva lot of work to do."

His first mission will be ensuring there is consistency and reliability in how the team operates.

"They're not the sexiest of words, but they get the job done," he said.

Voss wants Carlton to become the most professional team in the AFL.

"Now that's a really big benchmark to try and go after, but all the things I know about it start in that space," he said.

In terms of how they play, Voss said it starts at the contest, adding that team statistics such as ground-ball numbers and some pressure ratings are too low.
