The vital service for women's health was temporarily suspended in August following the COVID-19 outbreak.
The gradual re-opening of BreastScreen NSW clinics was announced at the September 28 11am COVID press conference by NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard and BreastScreen NSW Director Sarah McGill.
Clients who had their appointments cancelled during the suspension period will be contacted.
The reopening of clinics will be gradual, with the decision to open each clinic made on a case-by-case basis according to the level of risk and operational considerations posed by the COVID-19 Delta strain in the area.
A BreastScreen NSW spokesperson thanked the wider community for their patience.
"It may take some time before all screening clinics across the state are open," they said.
"Please wait to be reinvited by BreastScreen NSW before contacting us on 132050."
Several safety measures have been undertaken to protect clients and staff against the risk of transmission.
These include:
- Precautionary questions around health and travel
- Limiting the number of people in the clinic
- Practicing social distancing in clinic waiting rooms
- A minimal contact check-in process
- The use of personal protective equipment
- Cleaning of equipment and commonly used services.
If you have an upcoming appointment, here's what you can do to protect yourself and BreastScreen staff.
- Stay at home if you are unwell
- Wear a mask to your appointment
- Only enter the clinic 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment
- Check-in to the clinic you are attending using the QR code provided
- Attend your appointment alone
- Stay a safe distance from others
- Be patient and kind, we are in this together.
In line with advice from NSW Health, BreastScreen NSW strongly encourages women to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, ideally before attending their breast screen appointment.

It is now mandatory for all NSW Health staff to be vaccinated.
