AFTER more than 20 years at the top, John Barilaro was cast down from his spaghetti throne on Sunday, upset by hungry young contender Pasquale Perre at the annual Italian Community Day Festival.

Mr Pasquale's friends hoisted him into the air in jubilation after he unseated the former spaghetti champion by eating a plate of chill-infused spaghetti in a festival record time of 6.3 seconds.
"They all came and lifted me up. It was like we won the world cup," Mr Perre laughed.
Perre had been out for revenge after he narrowly lost to the Member for Monaro last year. It gave him the appetite he needed on Sunday to take on the champ.
"I thought I had him last year, but he pinned me right at the end. So I came back for revenge.
"I just got in there and got it done," he said.
Meanwhile, sources inside the Barilaro camp say he has taken the loss hard and will retire from competitive spaghetti eating.
However Mr Barilaro told The Queanbeyan Age this week that he bore Mr Perre no hard feelings.
"After wearing the Spaghetti Eating Champion title for the last 25 years, it's time to step aside," he said.
"Second place was all I was capable of this year, my opponent was just too strong- huge congratulations to him.
"I now officially announce my retirement.
"May The Gods of Gurgitation shine upon Queanbeyan's up and coming spaghetti eating champs."
