- Early spring bulbs planted in pots should be kept in shaded sites for the root system to establish before top shoots appear, after which they can be moved into a brighter light. Underdeveloped root systems will only produce short flower stems and smaller blooms.
- Last season’s hellebore seedlings can be moved to more permanent sites. Transplant into moist humusy soil that enjoys filtered light to half sun. Clip back the tough old foliage then top dress for new growth with compost and a good handful of blood and bone.
- Cut back the stems of lavender bushes after they have finished flowering. Annual trimming will help to keep the shrubs from becoming leggy or woody.
- In the vegie plot plant broad beans, lettuce, chard, spring onions, garlic and chives. Remove spent tomato crops, adding them to the trash pack rather than the compost heap.
