The current has picked up a little so I do expect a strong kingfish bite in coming days (weather permitting).

The boats that went to Montague struggled to get a legal fish; the big fish just disappeared with the current. Throw in some hungry seals and some 20km/h winds, it made it a hard day in the office.

Thankfully, the old faithful sand flathead were on the chew and saved most boats the embarrassment on returning home empty-handed.

Locally, the morning sessions are the way to go with most fish being caught right on sun up.

Lake Burley Griffin produced some nice golden’s around the bridge on Kings Avenue; Squidgy prawn plastic did the damage and the biggest catch went 48cm. Bait anglers using yabbies also nailed some Canberra gold fishing next to Commonwealth Avenue bridge.

I fished the Murrumbidgee early morning and hooked (and landed) a nice cod over the magic metre!

The fish hit my Gobsmacked surface lure three times in a row but no hook up. After 10 more casts I decided to put on a big Last Cast Spinnerbait and work the same retrieve as the previous strike; the second I started to reel: BANG.

There were a few more follows and hits by a cod and perch throughout the morning, but nothing else hooked.

I was pretty impressed by the numbers of goldens seen and the amount that followed my lures all the way to my feet. Made me wish I took the smaller gear...
