Macs Reef Road Landfill: The project to cap and finalise the closure of the Macs Reef Road Landfill is making good progress. The surface correction layer has been completed which included additional filling to avoid cutting into the waste. The next stage of the project is a geosynthetic capping layer, essentially an extremely high performing fabric with a clay layer in between, which helps to prevent the entry and exit of liquid from the waste. This process will take approximately two weeks. The whole project is expected to be complete around the end of October.

ClubGRANTS: Last week the council held a presentation night for the 2018 ClubGRANTS. Over 30 organisations were successful in securing a share of more than $200,000. This funding provides significant financial support for projects, services and programs that contribute to the well-being of the residents of the Queanbeyan-Palerang region. The three Clubs that contribute to ClubGRANTS are the Queanbeyan Leagues Club, Queanbeyan Kangaroo Club and the Queanbeyan Tigers Club. Support was provided to a diverse set of groups including the Braidwood Girl Guides, Rise Above cancer support group, the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, parkrun Australia to establish a Braidwood Park Run, the Veterans Motorcycle Club and many more.

The Storybook Cafe: Council’s Axis Youth Centre established a café in the Queanbeyan Library as part of a project to train volunteers to gain the necessary skills to enter the paid workforce. Upon completion of the training, the Axis Youth Centre also provides assistance with developing resumes and job seeking. The first round of volunteers have completed the program and a second round of volunteers is now underway. The program has been very well received by participants and the community, so why not check out the café next time you visit the Queanbeyan Library.
