While many Weston Creek residents experienced the 2003 bushfires firsthand, newer residents may not be fully aware of our local bushfire threat.
Last months’ Bullen Range fire serves as a stark reminder of the threat that dry, crisp conditions pose. It is very important to have a good understanding of what might happen in the event of a bushfire and how to deal with it.
Weston Creek Community Council invites all residents to attend our next public meeting to be held on Wednesday, November 28, at 7.30pm at Chapman Primary School, Perry Drive, Chapman.
Our speakers include Justin Sharples from the UNSW, who will present information on how fire behaves and the issue of how fire does not always spread at a steady rate or in one direction only.
He will speak about fire behaviour with particular reference to the geographic area adjacent to Weston Creek.
Greg Potts, from the ACT Rural Fire Service who will outline how to prepare and plan for a fire event including:
• Preparing your personal plan – do you stay or do you go?
• Preparing your home – making your house safer
• Bushfire alert levels
• Emergency contacts
• Your community – how can you get involved or volunteer
Come along and join in the discussion on personal and community safety in the event of a fire. The key is to be prepared and have a plan.
We had a wonderful celebration for the 50th birthday of Weston Creek with the garden party to celebrate this occasion in Fetherston Gardens. Those who attended I am sure enjoyed the day and a big thank you to everyone who helped to make the day possible.
We are still waiting on the Village Building Co to lodge their development application and will be interested to see the final plans for this site. Council is very concerned with the two proposals in Coombs to vary the lease from the stated number of units for the block. Everyone needs to be concerned if developers are able to vary the lease to build many more apartments than was originally planned for a site.
If there are issues that you wish to raise or discuss, please phone the council on 6288 8975. Otherwise, to keep-up-to-date with all issues affecting Weston Creek, please monitor the Weston Creek Community Council’s website at westoncreek.org.au or follow us on Facebook.
