But not only did it result in Tyson Frizell scoring a try, but almost made him forget the pain that came with copping a serious blow to his nether regions.

"Every bloke knows what it's like to get hit," Frizell recalled of the moment he collided with North Queensland fullback Jordan Kahu in round one.

"It's like that times ten and it doesn't go away."

The St George Illawarra star courageously attempted to play on in Townsville, before coming off and being rushed to hospital.

Frizell assumed the agony would simply disappear.

"It all hit me once I got in the sheds and all the adrenaline had gone. The pain wasn't going away. I wasn't too sure what was wrong," he said.

"I went to the hospital just to check it out to make sure it was okay, and within an hour I was under the knife."

Initially given a six-week timetable to return from a surgery that required seven stitches, Frizell showed remarkable healing powers to come back within three.

For the tough Kangaroos and NSW State of Origin representative though, it wasn't about gritting his teeth and bearing the pain.

"It's not an injury that you can block out and tough out. I had a couple of injuries in the past and sometimes you've just got to tough it out," he said.

It was about getting used to a cup commonly used by UFC fighters.

"You wear a mouthguard when you get your teeth punched in. And when you get knocked in the balls, you wear a cup," Frizell said.

"I'll be wearing that for a bit. Yeah, it is a bit weird and takes some getting used to."

"But once you're out on the field, you forget about it. If you're going into the game thinking about that, you're not giving 100 per cent.

"Once I got my head right, I was ready to go."
