Also talked about were former NSW fire commissioner Greg Mullins, and NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian - and the koalas who died and survived.

Research from AAP Mediaverse shows climate change was mentioned more than 30,000 times on social media, with audiences engaging with those posts more than 94,000 times.

The data was collected from hundreds of thousands of publicly available tweets and Facebook and Instagram posts from November 12 to 22 as the bushfires were raging.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison was second at 21,401 with more than 57,000 engagements.

People's concern for the impact on koalas got 5422 mentions.

But his rival Mr Albanese's figures didn't compare, getting fewer than 70 mentions. The only Labor figure to get any traction during the bushfires was Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Nationals leader Michael McCormack and Barnaby Joyce had about 2000 each, while Greens MP Adam Bandt had more than 1300.

Mr Albanese's low figures only rose after he wrote to the prime minister at the end of November asking for an emergency meeting on climate change and bushfires.

"These results indicate the public's desire for answers. People wanted to know how this could happen, who was at fault, and how we can prevent the crisis from happening again," Mediaverse analyst Jacquie Hanna said.

"Perhaps this explains why the LNP was so over-represented in this list, as they were looked to immediately in both traditional and social media, to answer these questions."

Ms Hanna said feel-good stories - such as a dog trained to find koalas in the fires - also clearly resonated with Australian audiences looking to find positive news in difficult times.
