The Hume Youth Orchestra (HYO) will be the representative Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Youth Orchestra formed by musicians from the region.
This region extends from Mittagong in the north to Yass in the south and everywhere within a 100km radius of Goulburn in between. HYO will be led, developed and facilitated by Hume Conservatorium as one of its core large ensembles.
Although HYO is not an auditioned ensemble, students must play at Grade Three level or above.
Membership is open to all young people who are engaged in the study of an orchestral instrument and are between eight and 25 years old. They do not need to be studying with a Hume Con instrumental tutor when they join. In order to apply, students are required to submit a short video recording of themselves playing their instrument.
Orchestral rehearsals are held weekly on Saturday afternoons between 2 - 4pm. Rehearsal venues are located in Goulburn, Yass and Queanbeyan. On the last Saturday of each month, there will be a full rehearsal of the orchestra at which all members from each rehearsal centre are required. These rehearsals will be held in The Creative Precinct at Hume Conservatorium in Goulburn.
Through their participation in HYO, members can audition for the Regional Youth Orchestra, the most elite regional youth orchestra in Australia. The conservatorium envisages linkage with the SYO, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Schools Spectacular Orchestra, Music for Canberra and other Regional Conservatorium Orchestras.
